On my way back to NYC

After seven weeks of traveling (I’ve been to Mali, Timbuktu and Lisbon, to name a few places), I am finally returning to New York this weekend. Getting back into the big city and the usual routine is not going to be an easy thing, but on the other hand, 2010 is a new year with a lot of new possibilities. I have an optimistic sense and am looking forward to receiving all the things I bought for VW Home.

Not even back yet, I’ve already started planning my next trip for December 2010. This year I’m heading to Uzbekistan. I like to have these annual trips to look forward to all year – it’s like dangling a carrot in front of the donkey’s nose. Have you ever traveled the Silk Routes? What comes highly recommended? And what does not?

Any shopping recommendations for Lisbon? When we go we always stay at the Palacio Belmonte. I think you’d love it.

When my wife and I were younger, we had neighbors, Fannie and Irv, who were a fit, trim and adventuresome couple in their 70′s, whose families were from Russia. They went back after it was Russia again, but also went to Uzbekistan, stayed in simple local accommodations in town and rural areas and hiked through the countryside. They brought back truly amazing tales of its landscape, buildings and people. Irv had been a businessman, but was a house painter in retirement. One day he fell off a high ladder, got up, dusted himself off and went back to painting. When Fannie found out, she chewed him a new one all over the neighborhood!

Wow. Traveling to such exotic places must be so inspirational for your work. I have never left the states. I hope to one day travel to Europe and buy items for my shop, and projects.
I am hopeful that 2010 will prove to be a good and PROFITABLE year!

Vincente – we travelled all my life as a kid and now I have a hard time staying in one place for any long period of time. It is always so much fun to plan the next trip! Always good to be home for a while too!

Can’t wait to see what you have purchased.

Following Michelle’s comment, I googled some photos and information on Uzbekistan, and it exceeds my impression. There is a desert in the center of the country, but the Silk Road cities and towns follow the river valleys in the south and east. The finely filigreed Islamic architecture is absolutely fantastic. The capital city Tashkent has modern conveniences but many other cities look untouched for centuries. The climate and landscape appears to be dry but green, perhaps like northern N Mexico, and it supports the growth of all sorts of fruits and vegetables. The Uzbeks grow cotton and produce bright fabrics of every color and pattern imaginable. It looks like a story-book land.
