Get out of the office!

I cannot stress enough the importance of travel for stepping out of your normal environment.  It opens your eyes and lets the child in you play. For me, this always brings such a strong creative energy.  When I spent 3 days in Amsterdam earlier this summer I was able to think about new furniture designs, colorations and ideas for a proposed product that I am presenting to a manufacturer. It all came from the sheer pleasure of treating myself to an adventure. I feel that people who believe in staying at the office 24/7 are truly wrong; an accountant that I had many years ago always said that a designer makes money when he/she is out of office. I truly believe this. You don’t have to travel far to be inspired, just find a place where your eye can wonder and see things in a slightly different way. I promise it won’t be a waste of time.

Any ideas how to stay inspired when travel is not an option? Maybe that’s a topic for another blog post……………….

Exactly. Changes in latitude, changes in attitude. Or a drive to one’s local art museum and galleries might work too. – Gary

When I travel and stay a month or more I always forget that I have a life some where else.. I do not bring anything to stay in touch including phones so I really do feel like I could start my life where ever I am….

It always been easy for me to create my life around where ever I land… I do miss a few things but if I have the ocean and a boat to dive off of and snorkel then I am in heaven… To lay at the helm of the boat and listen to the waves and feel the sun…. Just like a lizard…

Then to come home and let that fuel me for my next adventure…

So, nice to see Gary and I have to agree he leaves the most thoughtful comments and he has great insights….

I will be camping in the mountains in Colorado next week and then into Boulder for the great food experience at Frasca…

SO true! Inspiration for colors, textures, scents, vistas all come from visceral experiences. I tend to head for the beach when my brain’s cobwebs need a sweep and I ALWAYS come back with a re-freshed perspective. And – since my beach is either Malibu or Santa Barbara – a lighter wallet ;)

I couldn’t agree more. the times I feel most excited and enthused about design is when I travel. Appreciation and understanding of good design, in all forms, comes from experiencing it (and I never leave home without my camera!).

I have always believe that the world is not boxed and secluded in the four corners of our home, offices… I think, for us to imagine and wander, we should open up our eyes to see the natural wonders and beauty that life offers us. Thanks for sharing this. This is truly inspiring.

Vicente – do you have any recommendations for things to see/do/shop in Amsterdam? I will be there next week. Thanks!

I so agree with you Vicente! I just came back from a 3 weeks trip in China! That is a kind of trip that can change your life! It is incredible rich, rich and rich experience! But, I believe that a “step” to next town can teach you a lot of new things… specially if you go with open mind!
    Best,

I always feel so guilty when I leave the office though, like I am not making best use of my time. It is a mind set I need to get out of I know.
