Amsterdam Doors

One always thinks of the front door as being a black surface that leads you into the house, but to look at all the details of these doors tells you that there are indeed many ways of skinning the cat (I hope my cat Nene doesn’t read this!). They are full of inventiveness, whimsy and elegant details.

I love this post because I am always so drawn to beautiful and unique doors when I travel. I feel that they set the tone of the home in a way. All I know is that when I see a gorgeous door, a little part of me wishes for a sneak peek of the home’s interior!

    Dear Vicente,

    I agree with Paloma!!!
I too, want to go in when I see a great door.
I also know that when one lives in the city and not a country estate, one has to think how one would make ones house stand out from all the houses that have not even a seperate area around it, but are attached to it!!!!! A door is the obvious place to start……….
It’s just like fashion one stands out by what one conveys thru what one chooses to wear or not wear or how one put’s it all together!!!

    Hi Vicente.

You have been my design inspiration for as long as I can remember. So wonderful to discover your blog and have a real dialogue.

Your front door post is timely. (Love Amsterdam architecture!) Just now finalizing entry door/front porch details and colors for THE CONCORD GREEN HOME, a new construction, eco-friendly farmhouse set in historic Concord, MA. Trying to honor the local vernacular, but also bring in a bit of light and “loft minimalism” to the space… trying to decide between painted black vs. a “stripped pine” look for the front door. Hmmm… these photos have me leaning the classic paint direction.

    Thank you for sharing.

These doors/transoms are wonderful, shameless showoffs. The buildings absorb each one. Are there any bad ones? (I’m sure now cats were harmed in the pictures.)

My two favorite places to photograph windows and doors, for their wonderful uniqueness is Montreal and anywhere in France! I have a lot of photos of both for inspiration.

All doors of the channel buildings in Amsterdam have to be green as the colour of the water. In case you painted your door other colour the local authority will come to you beautiful door and kindly ask you to change the colour…

OK, how can someone have that color mixed? I want to do the shutters on my house in the color of the doors in Amsterdam
