Showroom Favorites: Screens

Last year when I was in Indonesia I found these wonderful ventilating wood carved screens from the late 19th century. Due to their patina and the way the paint has worn off, they have become great decorative objects in my work. I have used them above the fireplaces, over beds, in hallways and in living rooms. I like the way they bring texture into a space. They are hard to find so whenever I see them I buy as many as I can.

I really like the solid-transparent nature of the wood Indonesian ventilating screens and how well they are scaled as an alternate to framed art. I also like the Chinese folding screens as shown here and in the Waksal residence as a headboard in the master bedroom. I understand that the Chinese folding screens are made from actual wood screen doors. Where were these original Indonesian screens used? In windows, door transoms or some other inventive use? – Gary

Beautiful – what an artful way to bring both patina and pattern into the space.

I especially loved seeing the weathered blue ones when I visited your showroom earlier this month. I too, as Gary, would love to know the history behind the screens – their original placement the homes they came from.
