This week I have two installations – the first is a great apartment that will be a young couple’s first home together. They’re getting married in September.
The other is a space I worked on with my associate David Rogal. It’s in a very modern building on 8th Avenue and I feel about this place the way you do when you just cannot wait to get a space completed because you’ve already seen it so vividly in your mind. I’m anxious to see the juxtaposition that we’re playing by using traditional elements in this super modern building. We’ve bought great art for it, it involves architectural changes to the space and we stretched the boundaries of what we normally do.
I cannot wait to share both jobs with you all. I think when one does great work, whatever else happens around you – the economy, those extra pounds around the waist or any of the other normal adversities – it all fades when you see your creativity come to life. That gives me a sense of impetus and hope. Really, uplifting the spirit.
Why don’t you share some of the creative experiences you’ve had lately that lifted your soul?

My daughter and I went to my hometown Goodwill this weekend. We live in a suburb of Dallas and were attending a wedding in our hometown. My daughter is very tall for her age (7 years-old); therefore, finding clothing age appropriate can be challenging. We came upon several dresses that are for teenagers. She and I instantly decided that we could make use of these. With my daughter’s help, we are going to redesign the pieces to fit her and her age. It’s great to have her in the design process. She is very much into how her clothes look as well as how her room is designed. This is an imagination and creativity that we very much want to foster. It truly lifts my soul to see my daughter’s mind working to create something together.

Vicente when I look at your rooms I feel like I can breath…relax….unfold. I am looking at my digs with new eyes, thanks to your vision.

Is the second project the one in Chelsea where you posted a perspective pencil rendering of the master bedroom with the floor-to-ceiling upholstered headboard several months ago; “Successful Presentation” 2 March 10? It would be a learning experience to compare the concept to a photo of the final installation as we could with the project you posted a year ago “What Makes a Successful Presentation?” 30 July 09, if it doesn’t compromise the project’s publishing prospects.
Urban planning, architecture, interior design, furniture and product design, graphics, fine arts, writing, music and the healing arts and nutrition. It’s not just what we do, it’s the result of who we are and our on-going belief that the world can be a better place more inspired by beauty and order than motivated by anxiety. It always feels great to add a positive piece to the puzzle. Over the last two years, I have spent more time studying economics and the movements of markets, and completing a conversion from being an investor to a trader, than designing and detailing. But I finally feel that I have a handle on the macro and minutia, and can breathe easier as I navigate rough financial waters. This will hopefully allow my family to continue to follow their dreams and me to get back to mine. With both adult-sized kids being established in apartments, the cobbler will finally fix his own shoes and home. Both are beginning to sooth my soul.
BTW, the three mounted African headrests arrived and look stunning on a 19c English chest next to a white-on-white framed and matted gelatin silver print by photographer David Nester and a Pima Indian basket. Thank you for all the inspiration and information, and Trudi and Tom who are SO informed, friendly and helpful! – Gary

I recently helped a couple update their home after nearly 20 years of living in a stale environment. We actually cried together when it was all done because it was so beautiful. More importantly, she said that for the first time since she has lived there (20 years!) she looked forward to walking in her front door and for the first time she looks forward to entertaining, even if it is just having another couple over to dinner. The thrill of seeing someone actually enjoy their home for the first time ever is so uplifting and gratifying to me as a designer.

I am fortunate to split my time between my own decorative painting studio and helping out at my husband’s special events decorating studio. Almost every week, he tries to interpret the client’s vision and produce the setting that the client’s have dreamed about. You always hold your breath as the client enters the room for the first time. The biggest bummer is that it all comes down at the end of the night. Very fleeting as opposed to your work, Vicente.

When I started my design blog last October, I never expected to enjoy writing it as much as I do.
I have to tear myself away or else I could work on it all day–it is so much fun!
I would love to turn the blog writing into a real job of writing about design but don’t know how!
For now, still blogging!
Best,
Lynn

Not exactly an interior design project, but a creative one. Every year my company does a charity auction by and for employees to raise money for victims of domestic violence. I always create seasonal-appropriate baskets. Our auction is next week.
This year I did two going-off-to-college baskets. One is “Girly Girl Goes to School” and the other is “Big Man on Campus”. They each contain useful, fun, decorative items for a dorm room or apartment: throw pillow, lamp, hangers, dishes, cups, plates, flatware, a teddy “dog” for the girl, bedspread and towels for the boy, laundry bags, etc. All very affordable from IKEA and Container Store. The girl’s basket has bright and pale pinks. The boy’s is midcentury modern with black, gray, orange, blue and tan.
I try to make these baskets desirable and something that will fetch close to the price paid, or more. Doing these baskets has been energizing for me each year as I look to create something that a prospective buyer will just die for!
This is a small opportunity to exercise my creativity while working in a non-design field. (I am getting into interior design full-time in Sept, though! Going to school full time in Sept for a year and then hopefully get a job as a designer).

Firstly I must say I love this blog and of course your work Mr. Wolf, simply because it does lift my spirits..cheers to you all ! I am new to the field and feel that my projects thus far are good and my clients all have been very happy, which is the point of what we do.
I am on the end of completing a rooftop space at 70th and Central Park West and the other day I visited to place some of the items after the contractors finished their work. My client who is wonderful was there watering his new beautiful trees and flowers and sat down on the canopy day bed I found for him and smiled with such a wonderful glow that made me feel so great that I still carry that image with me.
There, in that moment dwells the answer to so much.

I FIND THAT TO BE ABLE TO BE IN THE MIDDLE OF A VERY DARK PERIOD AND STILL BE AT PEACE WITH IT, NOT TRYING OR EVEN BEING ABLE TO CHANGE WHAT EVER IS HAPPENING IS FOR ME THE MOST CREATIVE AND INSPIRING PLACE AND i AM ABLE TO DO THAT MORE AND MORE EVERY DAY. I WONDER MR. WOLF IF ON YOUR TRAVELS YOU FIND SOME THINGS THAT ARE PAINFUL TO SEE BUT YOUR ARE ABLE TO SEE THE BEAUTY IN THEM????

Melissa – That may be the best question anyone here has asked. – Gary

That is a good question and statement Melissa. Finding peace and seeing beauty.
