Getting your kicks…

When I was a kid I used to get my kicks in ways I don’t  anymore, so how do I get my kicks now? What turns my light bulb on first is getting a new client.  It does it to me every time; it’s the honeymoon, the romance and the tingling hairs on the back of my neck. Second is when I install a job, for me it’s the climax, it’s like the nurse bringing the newborn in for the first time.  Who looks at the baby’s slightly too big nose or ears? Who sees slight imperfections when the big picture is wonderful?

How do you get your kicks? Please keep it clean!

Love the moment of a dramatic paint change on the wall.

I agree a new client is a thrill. I love it when the lights go on after making a lighting plan, the wiring and installation then the lights. Always illuminating.

How do I get me kicks? Back in the 70’s I received training at the Karl Springer studio. I recently started my own business using what I learned many years ago, but trying to do my own thing with a more artistic expression. My thrill comes when I’ve just completed a piece and I stand back and admire it for the first time. I guess the more important question is not how but why this gives us a thrill? For me it’s my legacy, my little mark to be left behind in this world; I’ve created something timeless that will outlast me. I love your blog and I especially love your work, it is truly timeless and will certainly withstand the test of time.

I love when a friend, acquaintance or a person unknown to me comments about my paintings and tells me how much they enjoy them. It’s a great lift to my spirit to share that moment with them, whether or not they go on to purchase my work. Creating the work is half the joy. Having it seen and appreciated is the other half.

My Oregon house, which I designed and built from scratch, got an offer to buy in one week– in the worst market since the Depression! I lost money, but it was a thrill to beat the odds. For me, flipping houses is “design on a dime” meets “Vegas casino.”

Agree, nothing like the rush of a new client and that honeymoon stage. Can’t say the same for installations except when I get hugged at the end!

It’s a thrill when a new client buys their first piece of original artwork. It’s also fun when they put up resistance about some element or other, and then admit that I was right and they love the result.

    1) Unexpected praise, affection from the heart… A gift I did not asked for and it is perfect!
    2) Working with clients.
    3) Finishing my artwork.
    4) Sleeping in and cooked meals!
    5) Traveling
    6) Phone calls from my kids
    7) Having alone time with my hubby!

All that in random order …..

Design discovery. Like finding a new shelter magazine in my mailbox, and the excitement of sitting down after the kids are in bed to open it up! (though nowadays, I hope that when I turn the first few pages that I haven’t already seen the images out in the blogosphere). Or reading a terrific blog. Attending a lecture. Getting a new design book. Walking into a beautiful interior. Digging my feet into the sand at the beach. The smell of my children’s skin. And (with regard to my work – as you are always your worst critic) receiving a compliment.
