Being Under-Appreciated

Let’s talk about something really important to me now. Something that really hurts me at the quick. My housekeeper is on vacation and I have to make my own bed every morning and I am really pissed at this. Have I reached a point in my career that I still have to be cleaning the toilets? Doing the dishses? Cleaning the kitty litter? Is there any justice in this world?

Signed,

The Under-Appreciated

PS I even took out my own garbage! That sucks. Are you also an “Under-Appreciated”? How do you cope? My nerves are frayed over this.

Hehe, I know exactly how you feel! Mine is on vacation until April 12th! Taking out the garbage is ok – what get’s to me is washing the floors (and don’t even mention the toilet!). My mood is terrible for hours after doing it.

I USE TO HAVE A FULL TIME STAFF AT MY HOUSE THAT I STARTED HAVING AT THE AGE OF 25…
THE YEAR I WAS MARRIED… (AM NOW DIVORCED)
NOW, I HAVE SOME ONE THAT COMES 2 TIMES A MONTH TO CLEAN… THAT’S IT… WHEN I HAD TO GIVE ALL THE CLEANERS AND COOKS AND NANNIES AND GARDNERS UP.. IT WAS ABOUT 3 YEARS OF BEING LOST AND IN PAIN…NOW, I CAN DO IT ALL AND HAVE GAINED SO MUCH FROM HAVING IT TAKEN AWAY, BUT I SOOOOO UNDERSTAND YOUR FEELINS… IT FREE’S YOU UP TO DO ALL THE OTHER THINGS IN LIFE AND WHEN YOU THEN HAVE TO DO EVERYTHING IT IS A BIT OVERWHELMING…

I have a wonderful hardworking women come in every 2weeks. Then it’s me on the off weeks. But, I do have 2 teenagers…child labor…you bet!

This last cycle she pulled a muscle in her neck and couldn’t come. I was pissed too….not at her…but the thought of doing all the stuff you mentioned!!!

Vicente, it can be humbling, I agree! I used to have live in help now it is just me and I guess what? At this point I would rather buy more painting supplies for art than pay a housekeeper! You are certainly not in the same situation….and soon I will be able to have occassional help again. It does make you more appreciative…maybe she deserves a little bonus or homecoming gift!

    Vincente,

I just hired a housekeeper after 10 years of doing it on my own. I do feel your pain, but just think of the exercise you’re getting! Count it towards your 10,000 steps a day! Too bad Lent’s over or you’d have been able to “offer it up.” Guess you still can, but it’s not as glamorous out of “season.” All that said, I actually moved my painting studio to my home so that I could afford a housekeeper again. Priorities!

Hey Vicente! It ain’t the end of the world! You can cope-I make my own bed every day, and still sane! Reward myself with creamy choccy gateau!
    Give yourself a little treat!

Oh Vicente, should I feel sorry or just laugh?
Thank goodness the lady is on vacation and hopefully will be back soon! Perhaps you should give her a raise…You do need her clearly very much!

    Happy Easter!

PS: You could move to a hotel…

Vicente – Well, I had another good laugh. Like Mimi, I thought you were spoofing your level of discomfort, and building on the humor of the sacred Easter Bunny and the sacrificial lamb. But I’m glad for the second opinion! I wouldn’t question a man while he’s scraping his plate. This COULD be a week of excellent adventure, like the Rolling Stones sleeping in an unmade bed. But as Victoria suggests, there are always nice clean hotels. I know one with really superb rooms: The Westin Hotel on 42nd Street. – Gary

Todd – I never say something in a sentence when a paragraph would do. Congratulations on being brief and best! – Gary

Vicente, darling, if this is trying for you, my life would be at least the seventh circle of hell. Miss you, P

Understanding the mechanics of a house and day-to-day living will make you a better designer. And, don’t make your bed for a week.

That’s the funniest thing I have heard all day! Being upset about having to clean up one’s own mess.

Glad to see you have a sense of humour!

    Happy Easter Buddy!

You’re so funny – It’s refreshing how down to earth and accessible you are. That’s quite rare in your business. Love your posts!
