Transparency

The word transparency in our industry is one that is sometimes a little hazy. Whether it is the transparency of showing the client about how you run the business or what your work process is.  For me, one of the most important things is being open with other designers about how their business is doing, how much they charge, how they present, and how they deal with problems.  I think the more honest we are with our fellow designers and with our clients, the more successful our industry will be.

How do you choose to deal with transparency?

I feel strongly about this subject. Transparency is important in a business. It’s what helps to make a project run smoothly and with less confusion. It is important how you speak to something in clarity and transparency. ~best

I deal with it by working on all the places inside me that hide…..

I totally agree with you Vicente Wolf… when you say “I think the more honest we are with our fellow designers and with our clients, the more successful our industry will be.”

I totally believe that we should help each other… and share our success and failed with our fellows, and learn from each other. Who else we can learn from? I believe that each designer has their own projects and clients, and the other way around. There is always the right client/project for the right designer (most cases). And there is room for everybody. Besides, young designers like me are craving to learn… and to do the right thing! The professionals that have been in the industry longer could be more generous and help us out!
I want transparency and honesty to be my rule!

Thanks Vicente for starting this conversation!

There’s some irony in the question for me! Witholding information was not a natural practice so it took some time and work to learn that it’s a good thing in business. The idea of sharing information with clients and competitors was scarey.
But moving to real transparency changed just about everything. Nothing to do but focus on people and purpose….

I have to say that the more seasoned professionals I’ve met (my business is three years old now) have been the most kind, helpful mentors I’ve ever met. Gracious is the only word I can think of. I’ve heard that other designers have been stingy with information, but I haven’t seen that yet. You are one of them, Vicente, by what you share on this blog. And I’m so, so grateful to those that have mentored me. What blessings they’ve been……I will do the same when I (hopefully) become the “experienced” one.
