The New Royals

I know that all you bloggers out there will be blogging about the Royal Wedding  ad nauseam. All I want to say is the church, the dress, the bridesmaids, the flowers, etc etc. spoke of a modern clean approach which was simple yet elegant and in keeping with our times.

Ai Weiwei

I have been collecting photography for a very long time now and I like to collect contemporary artists from around the world. I usually pick up photographers’ work when I visit their country. One of the artists that I have collected from is Ai Weiwei, I have one of his iconic images that I bought years ago from his exhibit here in NY.  He also shot this same image in front of the Eiffel Tower and The Tiananmen Square, these images were a global political statement.

Ai Weiwei

When I opened The Arts section of the Times today I saw this news article about his detainment . It is sad when such a great artist is suppressed politically for speaking his mind.  There is something to be learned from suppression of opinions and beliefs, we are lucky to live in a country that allows freedom of expression and speech. There are too few places in this world that do not allow these freedoms.

If you feel the same way please consider signing the petition to free Ai Weiwei here http://twitition.com/ao9m7

Elizabeth Taylor

I was watching TCM this morning and they were showing clips of different classic movies and a clip of Elizabeth Taylor in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof came on, there really is no other creature as extraordinary. Her raw sexual persona was beyond and God knows her personal life was another movie in itself. It’s hard to believe she is gone; she always seemed to overcome her health problems.

There will never be another violet eyed diva like the great Elizabeth Taylor.

The Prince of Chintz

Last night I went to an event honoring Mario Buatta, not only for his 50 year career but also for The New York School of Interior Design renaming the materials library after him; The Mario Buatta Atelier.  Since I am Advisory Board at NYSID they asked me to design a table for the event, there were about 20 tables, all designed by different people in the industry.

I was lucky enough to have some help from Preston Bailey, who took my concept and brought it to life in an amazing centerpiece. I wanted to play with Mario’s title “The Prince of Chintz” and approach it with a sense of humor. Yes, I even used chintz and am surprised to report that I didn’t break out in a rash.

My date for the night was Margaret Russell, who looked ravishing like always. Mario gave a very humorous speech and funny toasts were given all night by his friends and clients.

A long time ago I applied for a job with Mario and everyone said, don’t work for him he is nuts! He certainly is nuts but in a way that makes you a jewel in the interior design industry.

NY SPACES

I am so pleased to see my space in NY Spaces. I am always amazed when I get to see my work in a magazine rather than in photos or in person. It is constantly hard for me to believe that other people besides myself are going to view my jobs.

Decorate

I received my copy of Holly Becker’s new book Decorate yesterday; I am pleased to say that Nene is prominently featured.  It does get annoying when your cat gets better coverage than you….

The book looks great Holly, nice work!

Doris Leslie Blau

I wanted to share this interview I did for Nader at Doris Leslie Blau, as you may remember he did a wonderful guest post while I was on my trip.  Many of you enjoyed Nader’s post so I thought you might like this too.

It was said to me many years ago by Doris Leslie Blau that a good rug is like a poem on the floor. With antique rugs, the lives that have been lived on the rugs and the histories of their makers are what give them meaning, while their beautiful patterns, colors, and weaves can be interpreted as their rhythm.  Several years ago, when I was asked by Ms. Blau to create a rug for her designer collection, I was so inspired by the idea of a rug as a poem that I created a rug that had an actual poem woven into it.
