Bedside Manner
A very good friend of mine was recently diagnosed with the beginning stages of breast cancer, which to any woman is devastating news, for my friend it was especially devastating because she’s had a few big bumps in the road already. Her first doctor was very proficient and professional but impersonal. His solution was a mastectomy, which she didn’t want to do so he tried to remove the cancer without doing the mastectomy.
After the operation she had to wait a week for the results and was then told they were unable to get all the cancer out. At this point he gave her the choice of trying the surgery again or the mastectomy.
I think part of the upsetting thing besides the obvious was the impersonal way the doctor dealt with her. He was very much; this is this, that is that…. Which caused her great anxiety, so I called clients of mine who have amazing connections in the medical world and they recommended Dr. Alisan Goldfarb. She immediately brought an enormous sense of humanity and concern to the situation. Dr. Goldfarb held her hand through the entire process and after she performed surgery my friend only had to wait 3 days for the results, she was cancer free!
The purpose of this post was to show how a little humanity can make a huge difference to someone who is stressed and in a vulnerable position.
Thank you tremendously Dr. Goldfarb!
The Prince of Chintz

Last night I went to an event honoring Mario Buatta, not only for his 50 year career but also for The New York School of Interior Design renaming the materials library after him; The Mario Buatta Atelier. Since I am Advisory Board at NYSID they asked me to design a table for the event, there were about 20 tables, all designed by different people in the industry.
I was lucky enough to have some help from Preston Bailey, who took my concept and brought it to life in an amazing centerpiece. I wanted to play with Mario’s title “The Prince of Chintz” and approach it with a sense of humor. Yes, I even used chintz and am surprised to report that I didn’t break out in a rash.
My date for the night was Margaret Russell, who looked ravishing like always. Mario gave a very humorous speech and funny toasts were given all night by his friends and clients.
A long time ago I applied for a job with Mario and everyone said, don’t work for him he is nuts! He certainly is nuts but in a way that makes you a jewel in the interior design industry.
A special thanks to Cowan and Tout for donating the fabric from Manuel Canovas
Rachel Brown

When a friend says: “you must come and see my daughter perform, she has an amazing voice and is a terrific performer!” you immediately wonder, is this just the mother’s love speaking and what am I getting myself into?
Last night I went to see Rachel Brown perform and I was blown away, she has the sweetest, most haunting voice, she also writes her own songs. She performed with a quartet; three of the men are from Mali, the other one is from Senegal, the play a combination of electric guitar, talking drums, and other native instruments.
Talent & beauty run strong in this family, Rachel’s mother is the renowned wedding dress designer Amsale.

Judy Niedermaier
When I returned from my trip I was so saddened to learn that Judy Neidermaier had passed away. She was always energetic, always open minded and always willing to give somebody a chance. When I went out on my own she was the first person to give me a chance by letting me design some pieces for Neidermaier. The industry has lost an amazing asset and we have all lost a fabulous lady.
My Gift Guide
Susann Chalom is selling the most outrageous mohair throws with an incredible selection of colors. Its the perfect gift to give or to receive….especially to recieve.
God love’s has a whole selection of items which are truly gifts from the heart. 100% of the proceeds go to fulfilling the urgent mission of God’s Love We Deliver. I especially love the martini pitcher and if you have never had Chuck’s famous brownie, they are mouthwatering.
Annick Goutal scented candle, Gardenia Passion is my favorite scent in perfume and candle form.
I usually give flowering plants over the holidays, amaryllis, paper whites or azaleas.
Baccarat’s small equator bowl is a mere $90 and works great for numerous things, including ice cream or floating flowes in. I heard in Japan they are using them as rice bowls.
And last but not least a good read…

I really can’t remember when I became aware that Vicente’s work was Vincente’s work, but I have so many tear sheets in my files from the last twenty years that are his. I am captivated by his point of view. We met a couple of years ago at a party in New York and it was such a treat to find that he is as warm and personal as his spaces. When I had the opportunity to visit with him recently, I asked him about a particular image in his latest book, Lifting the Curtain on Design.
The bedroom pictured shows, to me, the sleight of hand of a successful designer. Perfectly balanced, as though on the head of a pin, at first glance your brain may just register, “Yes, lovely,” but deconstructed you can see that there are a lot of elements at play. The bed is made traditionally with white sheets and damask, but the headboard is a rift on the expected with the side panels creating something of a cocoon. Still, it is the composition of the bedside table that has inspired me to have the book open to this page on my desk for weeks. The client is glamorous, says Vicente, and his germ of an idea began with the mirrored bedside tables of the ‘30s and 40’s. But rather than select just that, he designed a table of elegant but severe shape with antiqued mirror drawer fronts. The back of the piece is left open allowing movement and light so it does not become a solid block. And then, then, he has suspended an 18th century English mirror above it with heavy fishing line. Not only is the placement of the mirror unexpected, but it maintains a lightness and an elegance. There is a combination in this vignette of old and new, curve and line, silver and gold, mirror and glass, lucite and crystal and yet it reads as one unified vision.
“How do you come up with that, Vicente?” I queried. “Well, you have to listen to your gut. You just have to let it come. It’s like cooking; you are keeping a balance of flavors. Nothing is beating you over the head – you are trying to create a sense of romance.” So the success of the space has relied on a few things: the designer’s understanding of the client and her needs; the designer’s vision, his instinct, his gut; and, and this is not unimportant though sometimes overlooked, his ability to execute, to communicate to his craftsmen what needs to be done. If you can find all that in a designer, with or without the sexy accent, you are in for something really special.
During my trip there will be a series of guest posts, I am so excited Mrs. Blandings was our first. Please check out her wonderful blog here.

Prayers for a friend

The word CANCER is very scary, to know someone who has it really hits below the belt.
I have known Annette & Stan Cook for over 5 years, we have forged a strong relationship that started with the design process and ended up in friendship. When I heard she had cancer I knew that if there was anyone in this world that could face it head on and beat it, it was Annette.
With her spiritual beliefs, determination, unbelievable research skills, her incredibly positive outlook on life and the deep love she has for her family I knew she would be ready as she could be to fight this disease.
Today I received this video from Annette that documents her experience with being diagnosed and her courageous battle. The video also discusses a new treatment and hopefully a breakthrough that could possibly end everyone’s battle with cancer. I know we are all affected by cancer in some way or another and thought sharing this would be informative and helpful for anyone & everyone out there.
Your prayers and support for my dear friend Annette will be greatly appreciated.

The Dumped Project
Posted by Vicente in Friends, In the news, Projects on October 5, 2010
On a different note, a dear friend of mine Andrea Blanch who is a great photographer and conceptualist has started a new body of work that I think will be very interesting. The project consists of interviews with people that have been (to use a crude word) DUMPED!
I don’t know about you all but I have visited the dump a few times myself…
She is looking for subjects to interview, if you are interested here is the link to her site that will give you all the information you need. http://www.thedumpedproject.com/about.html
I think it’s a worthwhile project to participate in, as it sounds very cathartic and when it’s finished going to be a fascinating piece of work.
The Last Supper
Last weekend, also known as the last weekend of summer, I had two great friends over (Preston Bailey and Matthew Yee ) for our official last summer supper.
Starting to think about, besides fertilizing the garden, of what lies ahead for the Fall. I have the carrot of Thanksgiving to look forward to, and I am thinking Florence. I have been before and love the usual hot spots but for this trip I am looking for interesting out of the way destinations to visit. Does anyone have any ideas?
