At last!

Lo and behold…last Friday it arrived by messager. Safely wrapped up and sealed. The first copy of Lifting the Curtain on Design! I took it into the conference room where everyone in the office sat and we all looked through it – page by page. I took it on the weekend (in a padded envelope so it wouldn’t get damaged) and spent the whole weekend going through it – page by page.

I think it brings the other two books to the next level. It is full of information, features some of my travels and really, as a friend who saw the book said, is a very informative book. One that shares my experience and point of view with the reader.

The official launch is only in October. But if you want autographed copies, place your order through VW Home. We’re embarking on a book tour from October 20th after the launch on the 19th – I’ll be sure to share the schedule of the tour with you here as soon as it’s confirmed.

For today only, my book is on sale via One Kings Lane’s Monacelli Press sale. I know you all already own it, but I figured it might make a good gift for someone else!

There are many other great books for sale too. Perhaps I’ll indulge in a little shopping myself!

Frida Kahlo Book

I just received my copy of the new Frida Kahlo book featuring my collection of photography from her personal albums. It’s called Frida Kahlo: Photographs of Myself and Others and it is published by Pointed Leaf Press.

I think it is really wonderful. The art direction was done by Sam Shahid and he did an extraordinary job in laying out the collection. I am so thankful to Suzy Slessin for being so excited about the collection and wanting to make it into a book. If you have a chance and you find yourself fascinated by Frida Kahlo, get the book. The photographs really offer an amazing insight into her life.

I apologize for the lack of posts while I’m traveling, but my schedule is just packed. I promise to share all the experiences with you when I get back early next week!

In the meantime I wanted to share some big news with you. The date for my new book’s launch has been confirmed. Lifting the Curtain on Design will be launched on October 19th. And here’s the even bigger news…you can pre-order you book now for delivery after the launch. If you want a signed copy you’ll have to wait until after the launch for some book-signing opportunities, but if you have to have one asap, this is the way to go.

Sitting in front of me is the last revise of Book 3. I can taste it. It’s amazing to see the process from beginning to end, of adjusting photographs, moving them around, changing the volume and sizes of the photographs. It is, like the first two times, such an exhilirating experience. For somebody who always sees the glass half-empty, I was more and more positive with each revise and fell more and more in love with it. I hope it will give readers more information on the design process and I’ll be sure to let you know when you can start placing orders for Lifting The Curtain On Design. I’m so excited!

Frida Kahlo: Photographs of Myself and Others

After working with Pointed Leaf Press and Director Sam Shahid over the last year and a half, at last the book will be coming out in September this year! It will feature all of the photographs from Frida’s personal photography collection, which I won and each time I look at these photos, it makes me feel like Frida is right next to me. If you are an afficiando of her, you’ll love the collection as most of them are photographs that have never been seen before. As an art director, Sam really did an incredible layout which brings the collection to life.

While I was a away the art director for my new book created a sample chapter which was presented to me last week. And, despite having gone through this process twice before alread, it’s like having the midwife there and delivering the baby!

I was shown different versions of the same chapter and it’s always interesting to see how the art director approached my vision and what I was trying to convey. It gives me such an appreciation of how other venues of creativity work.

It was just such an incredible thrill to see what has taken almost two years of work to start it and see my photographs printed, read my words, see the juxtaposition of photography and copy put together. It is a true thrill and one that tells me that this egg is about to hatch. Cannot wait to share it with you all!

Crossing Boundaries

Learning to See

Today I see the galleys of my new book and I’m really nervous as each book one does has to be better and say something different from the one you did before. With each one it gets harder to find that unique angle, something that has not been done by everyone else. I hope this one will by showing the progress of jobs, new travel experiences and quite a few different elements from the last two books.
