Book Three

Crossing Boundaries

Learning to See

Today I see the galleys of my new book and I’m really nervous as each book one does has to be better and say something different from the one you did before. With each one it gets harder to find that unique angle, something that has not been done by everyone else. I hope this one will by showing the progress of jobs, new travel experiences and quite a few different elements from the last two books.

Keep your fingers crossed!

Vicente – I’m just going to second everyone’s emotion and say that I’m sure your book will be terrific. Your work keeps evolving and is always fresh and interesting. So I’m sure your book will be too. Can we order it directly from you? I would love an autographed copy for my library. – Gary

Will be looking to add it to my collection of highly-edited design books (which I am quite selective about now) and I am certain it will have page after page of VW beauty. Might add too….autographed copies for sale on here would be great. Congratulations!

I am confident no finger crossing necessary. I vividly remember the first time I viewed “Learning To See”. Not only was I enthralled with the pictures, but also the text. It is impossible to count how many times I been through it. And, the follow-up did not disappoint either. So I will be anxiously waiting with everyone else to get my hands on your latest book!

    Dear Vicente,

I love your books because you expose how your inter world works and how you apply that to design work…
You allow vulnerability to come forth and that moves me to allow that process even in desin work…
I take your book with me when I go to find antiques now for my home and I try out “getting in touch not so much with my creativity, but with your own”………
If you stay true to what is relevent now in you life along with what you have always known then this book will “touch others” and not just in the decorating world but all of us……..

Look forward to it. Im still hoping to get my autographed “Learning to See”. I have spoken with a couple of gals from your office about getting a copy. I was hoping to go to New York last year to pick up a copy in person but my trip fell through. I may be going in March for a seminar, but I think I should just have them mail it. Congrats on ALL your success. As I struggle with the demands of this new economy and savvy new buyer I often question if I still want to be a designer. It has become very challenging in this new environment. But then I come to your blog and see the success you have built and it encourages me to stay strong and carry on! Best, Amanda

Love your other two books so much, so very happy to hear there will be a third! I’m sure it will be just as amazing as the first two. Can’t wait to see where you have traveled to this time!

    Dear Vicente,
As an afficionado of great architecture and design, and yours in particular, I want to say how much I appreciate your first two books. I found them quite different from those of other leading designers, because they do so much more than name-drop. (Yes, it’s nice to know that’s a Paul Frankl cabinet, but it’s nicer to know why you chose to place it _here_, and how its shape enters dialogue with another, etc.) I just bought your second book, and though I’ve not yet finished it, I am captivated by the photography, which tells a story alongside your narrative —which itself is completely different from what one would find in any other design book. Your quest for originality there was completely successful!

Which brings me to the reason I finally decided to post a comment on this blog, which I’ve followed for a long time: you seem anxious to make the third book different from the first two, and you have often blogged about the struggle to get clients to understand how the design process really works (and pay for it). I am a writer and editor by profession; I often consult on manuscripts. You might be surprised to know that I face the same challenges getting clients to understand the value of what I do. One of the best ways I’ve been able to educate clients is to compare, side-by-side, two bits of text and explain why one is so evidently superior to the other. (I.e., there has to be enough difference that the uneducated client can sense it.) Sometimes this means taking something they’ve written, then re-writing it for them. The first task is to sensitize the client, to irrigate the desert created by years of exposure to poor quality; the next is to explain why the second piece is better than the first. I think this is similar to the idea you have for Book #3, showing projects in progress. It’s helpful to see what doesn’t work as well, though; this is something very few designers show. I’m not talking about egregious mistakes, I’m talking about showing the difference between very good and brilliant.

Of course, it takes years of experience on top of talent to achieve mastery, whether in design, photography, or anything else. Sometimes professionals want to guard their thought process because they fear someone else will catch up, but it’s not that easy: no one else can truly imitate your voice, because your voice (whether “heard” through visual or other means) is authentic to you–and not to anyone else.

Well, that’s my 25 cents’ worth. Hope it’s worth at least two cents!
