I would love to hear your thoughts on bar and counter stools. Ones that you like, ones that you have used. I have never cared much for bar stools, but I just installed a modern Bulthaup kitchen that’s white and very Zen. Just one plain, white built-in appliance wall and a large white island with a walnut table straddling it at one end. This is where the stools come in. I am also having a problem in that the bottom of the tabletop is at 34 1/2 inches and the top is at 38. Standard counter stools are too low and bar stools, too high. My thought is to cut a wood bar stool shorter. As to style, I think backless stools provide a cleaner look, but most people prefer the comfort of backs. (And I do want them to hang out.) I’ve seen maybe hundreds of stools, mostly on the internet, but nothing hits. Anything you have to offer would be greatly appreciated!

Vicente Responds:

Mmmm…why did you select that height? If I were you I would see if I could lower the table. Then, pair it with a bench or dining chairs, or why don’t you do the dining table the same height as the counter – it seems like you are stuck in the middle and it will be hard to find the right stools for that height. My favorite stools are the Paris ones that I designed for VW Home. Also, Design Within Reach has a great selection. Good luck!

I really like the VW Home bar stool that is in the picture, very classy looking, but yet looks comfy. It would go well in my home. I just did buy some Napoleon backless bar stools for my kitchen, mainly because it matched the countertops. They seem to be working well. good post. thanks.
