Ask Vicente: Basement Flooring

NameCheryl

City:  Highland Park

State:  New Jersey

Question:

Due to the recent hurricane I had to rip out the carpet in my basement which is done in a sleek look with a Ligne Roset Didier Gomez sofa.  What do you suggest for flooring? I have admired your work for many decades and would love your input.  The rest of the house has bleached wood floors and bone wool flat weave carpet.  Thank you so much.

Vicente Responds:

Look into self-leveling floors.  You can make it look like concrete, or install terrazzo flooring.  Terrazzo is cured, ground and polished to a smooth surface or otherwise finished to produce a uniformly textured surface.  You can also consider placing cowhides or area rugs on your floor for easy maintenance and a touch of elegance.

Follies

If anyone out there wants to see an amazing musical, you should go see Follies. Bernadette Peters is amazing as the lead. It is beautifully produced and performed with the incredible music of Sondheim. I say it is a must!

Auction Action

Yesterday I attended an auction at Christies outside of Paris, featuring items from the neoclassic Palais Abbatial de Royaumont.  This small palace houses a remarkable collection of Old Master and 19th century drawings, European furniture and works of art, sculpture, ceramics, silver and Asian art.

I saw wonderful pieces of furniture, all from far-flung places and bid on two items (in the thousand to few thousand dollar range) but didn’t end up with anything.  In general, prices were over the top, with dealers bidding hundreds of thousands of dollars for items like small side tables.  I had a lovely time, nevertheless, and am enjoying my holiday in France!

Do you enjoy going to auctions? Have you ever come away with a beautiful piece that you love?

On CNN en Espanol with Preston Bailey

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of shooting another segment with CNNE this time with my dearest friend Preston Bailey. We shot this segment in his NYC studio, he and his team had set up an amazing presentation for his clients who flew in from South Africa! Preston has such an immense talent and this presentation was spectacular especially with all the color!

Let me know what you think!

5000

I’ve added my 5,000th friend on Facebook this week! Wow!  I’m thrilled to be connected to such a great group of dedicated people all across the globe, and be a part of the dialogue that takes place here every day.  I have so much gratitude for you all, and hope to keep the conversation going for a long time!

Remembering

Where were you on 9/11? It is hard to believe it was 10 years ago and to me it’s still unbelievable that it even happened.  That morning I was walking into my office and the phone was ringing, I picked it up and was told that a plane had hit one of the twin towers. To this day I still can’t think about it without getting emotional. I don’t understand how anyone could condone those horrific actions.

Shopping in Paris

I’m getting ready for my trip to France.  Many of you have been asking me where I shop in the City of Lights, here are just a few. If any of you out there know of any great flea markets in Paris please share.
